Resisting the Summer “Slide”

Studies show that reading daily during summer break is the most important activity to prevent learning loss for younger students. In the summer, parents and caregivers are in the “teaching” driver’s seat. National PTA and Kindle worked with Vanguard to support a month-long Family Reading Challenge to motivate them to keep reading outside of the school calendar. The campaign provided families with tips and activities to encourage ongoing reading while challenging them to share photos, videos and memories using #FamiliesRead that could inspire others to follow their lead. Social media reach totaled more than 3 million, with an estimated 1.9 million Facebook accounts reached; 1.2 million Twitter accounts reached; 552,000 impressions on news sites such as cnn.com, slate.com, oprah.com and time.com; and 300,000+ PTA members reached through e-blasts.
