Putting Behavioral Health and Recovery on the Big Screen

Positive behavioral health storylines are more common on television and in film these days, but it wasn’t always that way. Working with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) on the Voice Awards program for more than a decade, Vanguard focused on celebrating the recovery of people with mental and substance use disorders and their very real potential to have a fulfilling life. From 2006 – 2017, the annual awards event recognized productions with positive, realistic stories alongside community leaders. Vanguard handled all aspects of the program, including name and logo development; event planning and management; the nomination and judging process; and media outreach, advertising and promotion. We recruited celebrity co-hosts and special award recipients who had expressed an interest or personal investment in behavioral health, and we connected with partners in both the entertainment industry and the behavioral health field who contributed their own audiences and resources to ensure an impactful, inspiring event.
